Engineering Expertise
Engineering Design Examples
Mechanical Engineering Design
3D Modeling, Rapid Prototyping, Geometric Dimensionsing and Tolerancing (GD&T), Systems Modeling, Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
15 years of experience in complex engineering design that ranges from the automotive industry to consumer accessories. I specialize in early stage analysis (math!) and prototyping; Design For Assembly (DFA); and Design For Manufacturing (DFM).
Hardware / Software Engineering Design and Integration
Python, C, C++, Bash / Linux, SQL, HTML/CSS/Wordpress
If you’re looking to complement your mechanical design with robust software development, I have almost two decades of experience combining hardware and software and I am an expert in several programming languages.
Engineering Design Thinking
Brainstorming, Mindmapping, Project Management, Testing and Evaluation
I’ve led many projects and teams from sketches to reality and I’ve done it using an engineering design process that I helped to develop. Whether you’re stuck at the beginning or just trying to improve an existing solution, I can help guide your design by ensuring it is both functional and reflects your company image
Space Design
Maker Spaces, Active Learning Environments, Prototyping Labs
I built the first maker space / active learning space for one of the largest engineering programs in the USA. And then went on to advise universities, high schools and communities. Let’s identify the tools and equipment, furniture and layout, and (most importantly) ethos and culture you need to be successful.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much do you charge?
It depends on the job. I’ll bid a project, rather than quote a rate, based on my expertise and complexity of the job.
Do you offer discounts for not-for-profit clients?
Yes! Actually, that’s why I started DeWald Designs. Many government and charitable organizations struggle to get quality engineering / design work because they can’t afford a full-time professional. And I’m here to help.
Do you offer pro-bono work?
Are you working on something inspiring? Do you want to change the world? Then maybe! Send me a message and let’s talk.
How do projects typically progress?
We’ll agree on an installment process and Design Review schedule before any work begins. Consider these reviews as an opportunity to verify that goals are being met and as a responsibility to make decisions.
Can you design {some crazy new idea}?
Yes.
Do you know how to use {some technology}?
Maybe. If I’ve never used {some technology} before, I’ll be upfront about it. If I find the project interesting enough, I’ll learn to use it…on my own dollar, of course.
